Conflict Management

The Conflict Management Programme is an intensive two-day training programme focused on the fundamentals of conflict management. The interactive programme covers the nature of conflicts, and the broad range of techniques for the management of disputes across a broad range of contexts, from professional engagements to workplace issues to personal relationships. Participants will learn how to develop dispute management and resolution strategies appropriate to diverse situations and relationships. The skills training will enhance the ability of participants to understand, diagnose, analyse and manage conflicts.  This programme is suitable for C-suite executives, professionals, managers and other executives who want to advance their professional skills.  This programme is a compulsory pre-cursor to SMC Commercial Mediation Accreditation programme.

By the end of this training programme, participants will be able to:

1. Understand, diagnose, and analyse conflicts and their causes
2. Apply appropriate dispute resolution management techniques to different conflicts
3. Optimise the beneficial outcomes of conflict

Eligibility criteria

Academic qualification
Interested applicants must hold a diploma or a degree in any discipline.

Language proficiency
An applicant whose primary language is not English or whose medium of instruction at tertiary level is not English must show proof of proficiency in the English language.

The requirement for English proficiency is:

Exemptions

  1. The following applicants are exempted from Conflict Management and are able to sign up directly for Commercial Mediation.
  • Those who have completed an SMC two-day training programme on mediation within the last two years.
  1. The following applicants are exempted from Conflict Management and Commercial Mediation and are able to sign up directly for Commercial Mediation Accreditation Assessment. Applicants are, however, strongly encouraged to attend Commercial Mediation. Applicants from this group will be entitled to a 15% discount off Commercial Mediation.
  • Law students from the National University of Singapore who have completed the mediation elective. Applicants need to register within two years of receiving their degree.

Commercial Mediation Training and Accreditation Assessment

Participants who would like to become an SMC Accredited Mediator may take the (new) Mediation Skills Assessment (MSA) after completing Conflict Management and Commercial Mediation courses.

Please note that passing the (new) Mediation Skills Assessment (MSA) will allow you to describe yourself as an SMC Accredited Mediator. This does not guarantee emplacement on SMC’s panel of Mediators.

Work-based learning

Candidates who pass the new Mediation Skills Assessment (MSA) may proceed to apply for work-based learning where you can participate up to 3 real-life mediation cases. More information will be released at a later date.
