Commercial Mediation

The Commercial Mediation Programme is an intensive four-day training programme targeted at developing the skills required of an effective commercial mediator.  Using a wide variety of interactive teaching techniques, the programme will cover the mediation process, problem solving in conflict situations, the management of parties and relationships, communication skills, and a broad range of tools and techniques for effective mediation. Participants will have many opportunities to practice each component of the communication, problem solving, conflict resolution skills essential to becoming an effective mediator. This programme is the second stage of the SMC Commercial Mediation Accreditation programme. To complete your accreditation journey to be SMC Accredited Mediator (Terms and Conditions apply), you may sign up for SMC Mediation Skills Assessment.

By the end of this training programme, participants will be able to:

1. Understand the mediation process and apply mediation effectively to appropriate conflict situations, at appropriate stages of a conflict
2. Prepare effectively for mediation as a mediator, and as a party to mediation
3. Conduct a mediation effectively to achieve mutually acceptable outcomes
4. Use a range of communication techniques to mediate dispute successfully

For this activity, this includes logging in at the start of the webinar and logging out at the conclusion of the webinar on each day of the activity, and not being away from any part of the webinar for more than 15 minutes on each day of the activity. Eligibility criteria


Academic qualification
Interested applicants must hold a diploma or a degree in any discipline.

Pre-requisite

  • Interested applicants must complete Strategic Conflict Management for Professionals (Module 1) (SCMP1). Registration for Commercial Mediation must be made within 2 years from the end of SCMP1.
  • Interested applicants must complete Conflict Management. Registration for Commercial Mediation must be made within 1 year from the end of Conflict Management.

Note: Those who missed the application period are required to complete Conflict Management programme. Any appeal for extension of application period will not be entertained.

 Exemptions

  1. The following applicants are exempted from Conflict Management and are able to sign up directly for Commercial Mediation.
  • Those who have completed an SMC in-house two-day training programme on negotiation or mediation within the last 1 year.
  • Part B students who took mediation advocacy elective and/or mediation elective at the Preparatory Course leading to Part B of the Singapore Bar Examinations within the last 1 year.

  • 3 assessment components; role-play assessment, written assessment and reflection
  • Role-play assessment is 1h and candidates to perform up to the end of the 1st private session
  • Course run till end 2024 (Refer to course information for exact course dates)

Mediation Skills Assessment [new format] Accreditation
  • Interested applicants must complete Commercial Mediation.
  • Registration for Mediation Skills Assessment must be made within 1 year from the end of Commercial Mediation.
  • 3 assessment components; role-play assessment, written assessment and reflection
  • Duration of role-play assessment (new format) is 1h 30min and candidates are to participate and will be assessed up to the end of the 2nd private session
  • Tentative roll-out period: 2023
Work-based learning Intermediate
  • Pass the Mediation Skills Assessment [new format]

Will I be able to utilize any SSG grant or SkillsFuture Credit?

At the moment, SMC has successfully applied for the Conflict Management and Commercial Mediation courses to be SkillsFuture Credit eligible. SMC is working on applying for SSG Grant accreditation and we will update details on our website when they are approved.

Are the new courses SIMI and IMI accredited?

SMC is working on applying for SIMI and IMI accreditation and we will update details on our website when they are approved.

How will this affect participants who have taken SCMP1?

Participants who have attended SCMP1 have the options to take SCMP2 which will run till end 2022. SCMP2 dates are published on SMC’s website. Alternatively, they may register for Commercial Mediation. However, participants need to take note that Commercial Mediation is a 4-day course and has a higher course fee.

From 2023, SCMP2 will be phased out completely. Participants who have attended SCMP1 may proceed to take Commercial Mediation and MSA [new format].

How will this affect participants who have taken SCMP2 or candidates who have to retake MSA [old format]?

Participants have attended SCMP2 or candidates who have to retake their MSA have the options to take the MSA [old format] which will run till end 2024.

I am interested to register for Work-Based Learning programme. What should I do?

The Work-Based Learning programme is designed to assist new mediators to have a real-life experience in mediation. However, this programme is only opened to candidates who completed Commercial Mediation and passed the MSA [new format].
