Training
The Singapore Mediation Centre (“SMC”) would like to
extend an invitation to you, to participate as a
mediator in a pilot project to encourage Family Law
Mediation (“the Pilot Project”) at SMC.
The Pilot Project will involve accrediting Family
Law practitioners as SMC Associate Mediators. In the
circumstances, you are cordially invited to apply to be
an Associate Mediator for the Pilot Project. Please
fill up the registration form attached to this letter
and return it by fax or post by Monday, 6 November
2009 if you would like to participate in the
Pilot Project (please note that only participants
with 7 years of post-qualification experience in family
law practice in Singapore may apply). The training
for the Pilot Project would be as follows:
- Participants are required to attend a 2 day
basic mediation workshop[1]
on 2 – 3 December 2009;
- On completion of the 2-day basic workshop,
participants would go through clinical training of:-
- Half-day Coaching and Assessment
Session through role plays with coaches who will
provide feedback on the participants; and
- Observation by co-mediator of up to 3 mediations under
the Pilot Project (or, at the discretion of SMC, any
other SMC mediation), who would provide feedback to SMC.
Only participants with satisfactory feedback reports would
be accredited as SMC’s Associate Mediators i.e. there may be
circumstances under which you may not be accredited.
For your further information, you may wish to note that
the Panel of Associate Mediators is different from SMC's
Panel of Principal Mediators. In general, mediation
cases referred to SMC are only assigned to the Panel of
Principal Mediators. The accreditation of ‘Associate
Mediator’ is a formal recognition of one’s mediation
skills and does not mean that one is assigned SMC's
normal cases. However, SMC may assign cases under
specific schemes (such as the Small Case Commercial
Mediation Scheme or the Pilot Project) to Associate
Mediators. An Associate Mediator would also have to pay
an annual fee to SMC and would be entitled to certain
benefits and privileges.

*Please note that the workshop will only take place if a
minimum number of participants sign-up.
[1] A waiver of the attendance at a basic
mediation workshop may be obtained if a participant had
attended the SMC basic mediation workshop or equivalent
within the last 2 years.

In addition to our regular training workshops, the SMC
can design customised courses to meet the specific needs of
our institutional clients. Our instructors will work closely
with our clients to customise the syllabi of in-house
workshops, in order that specific learning goals are
realised. Our customised courses can be conducted on our
clients’ premises for the convenience of their members.
The SMC can also provide training for trainers if candidates
meet the minimum requirements that have been set by the SMC
Training Panel. Such training will help to develop the
capacity of an organisation to conduct internal workshops on
negotiation, mediation and conflict resolution effectively.
