Season's Greetings

As the year comes to a close, it is customary to take stock of what one has done and to articulate wishes for the New Year.

At SMC, 2015 started with a bang, recording our largest growth in matters mediated at SMC in 17 years. It signaled an increasing acceptance of mediation by business users as well as individuals to resolve their disputes. Building on this momentum, we strengthened our partnerships with trade associations and chambers of commerce to educate and to help businesses fully appreciate the value of mediation as a strategic risk-management tool that they can count on in commercial dealings. Of significance, the Rental Practices Working Group of the Singapore Business Federation-led Small Medium Enterprises Committee launched the Fair Tenancy Framework which aims to establish a set of clear leasing guidelines for small businesses. It incorporates mediation at SMC, as a preferred way to resolve issues between tenants and landlords.

SMC’s Singapore Mediation Charter, a pledge by businesses to consider mediation as the first resort in dispute resolution, also grew from strength to strength, welcoming close to 40 new signatories. Rounding up our activities for the year was the annual Singapore Mediation Lecture at which we were privileged to host Dr iur Hans Peter Frick, former Group General Counsel of Nestlé SA whose address to business users wrapped up the strategies to make mediation an integral part of a business.

2015 was also a great year for SMC’s training arm locally and abroad. Overseas, SMC was invited to train in Fiji, Vietnam, Brunei, Myanmar, Thailand and Cambodia.

The stars shine bright for mediation as it heralds a new dawn where speedy, cost-effective and creative solutions make sense for business disputes.
