History

At the Opening of the Legal Year in January 1996, the Honourable Attorney-General, Mr Chan Sek Keong, proposed the establishment of a commercial mediation centre in Singapore. The Singapore Academy of Law followed up on this proposal and began to provide a commercial mediation service in December 1996. The Supreme Court facilitated the growth of mediation by referring suitable cases for mediation. Following the success of the pilot project initiated by the Commercial Mediation Service Sub-Committee of the Singapore Academy of Law under the chairmanship of Justice Goh Joon Seng (now retired), the SMC was incorporated to give greater operational autonomy to the commercial mediation service.
